A ravishing new stone age unfolds as jewelry maisons seize on the ancient art of stone carving, turning out a spate of sculptural baubles and objets d’art. Epoxy Acrylates
When it comes to jewelry, we’re constantly in awe of Mother Nature’s impeccable touch. Dazzling stones in countless colors captivate our attention, but something magical happens when those gems are transformed by a human hand. Recently, we’ve noticed a shift in interior design to pieces that have a more bespoke, handmade feel. Ceramics with touches of fingerprints and one-of-a-kind creations are quickly becoming the most sought-after designs. This trend translates into the world of jewelry as well—however, handmade and hand carved jewelry is nothing new. Since practically the dawn of time, humans have been carving into hard and semi-precious stones to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Topaz, amethyst, peridot, citrine, aquamarine and lapis lazuli have long been manipulated to create certain shapes and designs, and now we’re seeing some of the most celebrated maisons like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels use high-quality stones to create carved masterpieces.
The touch of these handmade pieces not only includes necklaces and earrings, but also the vessels we use to hold them. Carved boxes are also coming into vogue and we’re absolutely fascinated by them. It’s like jewelry for your vanity or side table. Here, our favorite pieces of carved jewelry and carved jewelry boxes.
Jade pieces like this stunning cuff are carved and smoothed to absolute perfection. This dreamy piece—which is embellished with diamonds and a Colombian emerald—adds a unique twist to the tradition of Jade carving.
These stunning lapis and rock crystal earrings are designed with the age-old technique of faience, or tin-glazed earthenware, in mind. The carved lapis lazuli has inclusions of golden flecks that are utterly divine.
Coveted lapis is carved into a floral motif to crown a petite aventurine box. At only three inches, this stands with regal elegance.
Beads of ebony and lapis lazuli are separated by almost hidden diamond rondelles. The center pendant, with turquoise at its core, will surely turn heads.
Amethyst is carved to beautifully display a segment from an Art Deco diamond bracelet. The combination of old and new makes this piece truly timeless.
The technique of carved stones can sometimes lend itself to intricate designs, like those seen in these floral-patterned lapis earrings.
Swirls of agate take center stage in this gem of a box. The waxy finish of this quartz-like material makes it subtle yet alluring.
