Chandler boasts a number of advantages as a location to start or grow a business.
Welcome to Chandler, Arizona, the Community of Innovation. Come meet Mayor Kevin Hartke and the members of the City Council.
The Chandler City Council authorized a citywide effort to convert streetlights from high-pressure sodium to new energy-efficient LED light fixtures.
Chandler operates and maintains more than 28,000 streetlights along City streets. About 10,000 of those are LED lights. The remaining 18,000 streetlights are being converted to more energy-efficient LED lights within neighborhoods and along major roadways.
As of October 1, nearly 26,000 streetlights have been converted to LED lights.
The LED conversion will significantly reduce Chandler’s streetlight electricity consumption while also significantly reducing future maintenance, material and supply costs.
LED technology provides the following benefits:
The annual energy savings from LED lighting add up to $673,000. Those savings will pay for sworn police officer positions to serve our community.
Chandler has contracted with Ameresco and Fluoresco Services to make this conversion which begins in early January 2023 and is expected to take about 12 months to complete. The project is relatively non-intrusive and consists of crews using a bucket truck at each streetlight to replace the existing light fixture, or luminaire, with a new LED light fixture.
We are currently updating our procedures for residents to request shields for the LED streetlights.
Please note that the new LED shields do not resemble the metal shields that were used previously for high-pressure sodium lights. They have a much smaller profile but function the same way.
The metal shields that were used in the past cannot be installed on the new LED streetlights.
Work is expected to take place Monday through Friday during daytime hours and, in some cases, these hours may be further restricted to accommodate school hours or peak travel periods. Crews will work through Chandler in quarter-mile sections with the following anticipated traffic restrictions, as needed:
No traffic restrictions are expected in most cases with vehicles being directed around the work activity. Residents may be asked to remove vehicles parked on the street that are near streetlights should they prevent work from taking place.
No traffic restrictions are expected in most cases with vehicles being directed around the work activity.
Traffic restrictions may be needed to restrict a travel lane to shift traffic away from the work activity. For questions, concerns, or additional information, please email us or contact us.
