Join community members of all ages for a special morning of safe eclipse viewing and science activities at Los Alamos High School. The event takes place on Saturday, October 14. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the inner courtyard at Los Alamos High School.
The event is free and features eclipse glasses, eclipse viewing tips and eye safety resources. The eclipse will also be projected onto a large 23-foot by 13-foot, high-resolution, LED, outdoor screen provided by the Los Alamos County Recreation Division. Educational tables and hands-on activities will be provided by many clubs, organizations and agencies including Bandelier and Manhattan Project National Park Service, Pajarito Astronomers, PEEC, J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee, Los Alamos Public Library, Girl Scouts, school clubs, Los Alamos Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol, Eye Associates of New Mexico, and many more. Last winter, Los Alamos High School teacher, Debbie Grothaus, and retired astrophysicist and PEEC volunteer, Galen Gisler, reached out to Senior Librarian Eva Jacobson to discuss a grant opportunity to secure free eclipse glasses for the community. From this small, early gathering of event coordinators, a collaboration grew quickly, and many community organizations joined, in an effort to celebrate this rare solar event. “This event is truly a result of so many community members joining forces,” said Jacobson.
Galen Gisler explains that the maximum eclipse happens at 10:36 a.m. on Saturday, but people will begin to gather at 9 a.m. Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow upon the Earth. For this eclipse, Los Alamos is within the 125-mile-wide path of annularity. Our geographic location makes us a part of the select few—about 0.4 percent of the entire world population— who will be in the central path of the eclipse. The Sun will appear as a perfect “ring of fire” when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun.
Parking is available in the Sullivan Field and Smith auditorium parking lots. The inner courtyard is located behind the main wing of the high school and is not immediately visible from the parking areas. Students from the astronomy club will be present to direct participants to the event.
