Mayor Mark Holm says the carts could pose a safety threat for the city.
The Ankeny city council is considering the legalization of golf carts on city streets with speed limits of 25 miles per hour or less.
The ordinance would also permit drivers to cross primary streets across the city.
Some citizens who live near golf courses, like Briarwood Golf Club, say they've already been driving the carts to nearby courses.
Ankeny resident Josh Zinn has been driving his cart on the road for years.
"I've passed a police officer over the last couple years on Trilein [Drive] here and haven't had anything said," he said. "I don't see the abuse of it within our community right here, but obviously, if there's pushback, there must be somewhere."
Mayor Mark Holm joins others in saying the carts could pose a safety threat for the city.
"Number one thing here is about the safety of our citizens," Holm said. "If you're crossing a 35-mile-per-hour, five-lane road, you have to pick up the speed pretty quickly and get out of there."
It's a speed change, he said, golf carts aren't made to do.
There will be a public hearing about the ordinance held later this summer.
If the ordinance passes, Ankeny would become the largest city in Iowa to allow the carts.
