GRANT COUNTY, WA - The Grant County Sheriff's Office is advising citizens to be vigilant after a credit card skimmer was found on a fuel pump in Schwana, WA Thursday morning.
The device, which was found on a fuel pump at Outpost Grocery, was first noticed by a technician. It is unknown how long the skimmer had been on the pump and how much personal or financial data the skimmer has recovered.
A skimmer is a device or software installed on card readers by thieves that can read the magnetic stripe or the card number, expiration date and cardholder's name. They are often times found installed on fuel pumps or atm's. The thieves then take the information to make fraudulent purchases.
According to the FBI, card skimming scams result in more than $1 billion being stolen each year.
If you believe your data has been skimmed, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
